One of the best trail to follow is the Allegheny Highlands Trail, which was built by Henry Gassaway Davis in 1884 and for tis 24.5 miles follows the original way of the Pittsburg Railway and West Virginia Central. It’s one of the best trails to enjoy panoramic views of this State, as the way go through small towns and rural villages.
Blackwater Canyon Trail, located in Monongahela National Forest, was once used to haul coal through the canyon. Today this trail is one of most amazing trails in WV. It’s simply beautiful, with trees all around, mountains on both sides of the canyon and the roaring of the Blackwater River as a soundtrack. The best direction to get is from Thomas to Hendricks as in the opposite direction there is a considerable climb.
Least but not last is the Brooklyn to Southside Junction trail, which tells the story of Appalachia and “King Coal”. Once this trail was the most used to haul coal from the New River George, now its one of the most touristic attractions in West Virginia for nature lovers. The trail is really amazing for bikers as it follows the path of the railroad. Plus you can enjoy the view of one of the best whitewater rivers in the U.S.
